The right timing depends on what the mask is made of, not what it claims to do. Leaving a mask on too long does not give you more benefits. It can damage your skin barrier, cause irritation, or reverse the effects you were going for.
Timing by Mask Type
| Mask Type | Normal Skin | Sensitive Skin |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet Mask | 15 - 20 min | 10 - 15 min |
| Clay Mask | 10 - 15 min | 5 - 10 min |
| Gel Mask | 15 - 20 min | 10 - 15 min |
| Peel-Off Mask | 15 - 20 min | Avoid if possible * |
| Modeling Mask | 20 - 30 min | 15 - 20 min |
| Exfoliating Mask | 5 - 10 min | 3 - 5 min * |
* Peel-off and exfoliating masks carry extra risk for sensitive skin. Read the sensitive skin guide for details.
Why These Numbers?
Timing depends on the mask material, not its marketed function. Clay absorbs moisture after it dries. Sheet fabric re-absorbs serum once depleted. AHAs keep dissolving skin cells the longer they sit. Same claimed function, opposite failure modes, completely different timing windows.

The Masking app for iPhone sets the right duration for each mask type, adjusts for sensitive skin, shows a Live Activity countdown on your Lock Screen, and uses AlarmKit to alert you even if you fall asleep. After each session, it logs the time to Calendar and schedules your next reminder. No guessing, no over-masking.
